For Department of Defense procurements.
The following requirements are applicable when specified by the contracting officer.
A. Commercial packaging. Five and one half to eight fluid ounces (162.65 to 236.59 mL) or 46 fluid ounces (1360.38 mL) of Type III product, as specified, shall be packaged in a metal can in accordance with good commercial practice. When specified, five and one half to eight fluid ounces (162.65 to 236.59 mL) of product may be packaged in commercial easy-open cans.
Easy-open cans. When specified, single-strength juice may be packaged in single-service cans, except that the top shall be suitably scored to provide a tear strip, liquid-pour opening. A corrosion-resistant hand or finger grip shall be affixed to one end of the tear strip. The scoring shall be carefully controlled to insure a score deep enough to permit hand opening of the top without impairing serviceability of the can. Alternatively, the can top may have a prepunched, liquid-pour opening sealed with a strip of peelable, pressure-sensitive, foil-laminated, polymeric tape normally used for the product.
B. Commercial packing. Cans shall be packed in a container complying with the Uniform Freight Classification or National Motor Freight Classification.
C. Export packaging. Five and one half to eight fluid ounces (162.65 to 236.59 mL) or 46 fluid ounces (1360.38 mL) of Type I or Type III product, as specified, shall be packaged in a metal can in accordance with good commercial practice. When specified, five and one half to eight fluid ounces (162.65 to 236.59 mL) of product may be packaged in commercial easy-open cans.
D. Export packing. Cans of product shall be packed in a snug-fitting fiberboard box constructed and closed in accordance with Style RSC, Grade V3c, V3s, or V4s of PPP-B-636. Each fiberboard box shall be reinforced with nonmetallic strapping or pressure-sensitive, filament-reinforced tape in accordance with the appendix of PPP-B-636.
E. Unit loads (commercial and export). Shipping containers shall be arranged in unit loads in accordance with MIL-L-35078.
