COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
APPLES, FRESH
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in lieu of Federal Specifications Y-F- 1741/Gen and Y-F-174 1/1.
This Commercial Item Description covers fresh apples for eating and cooking, suitable for use by the Federal Government.
Salient Characteristics
Lots of fresh apples shall comply with all of the requirements of the U.S. Standards for Grades of Apples, and unless otherwise specified, the U.S. Condition Standards for Export.
Apples intended for eating or cooking shall be of a red, yellow, or green variety, as specified in the contract or purchase order; and shall be of U.S. Extra Fancy, U.S. Fancy, U.S. No. 1, U.S. No. 1 Early, Combination U.S. Extra Fancy and U.S. Fancy, or Combination U.S. Fancy and U.S. No. 1, or comparable State grades as specified.
Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the fresh apples shall be from the latest season’s harvest.
Packaging, packing, labeling, and marking: Apples, in the quantity and package size specified in the contract, shall be packaged and packed in accordance with good commercial practice. Containers shall be stamped or marked as to numerical count, or with minimum size in diameter. Unless otherwise specified, product shall be packed in containers used by producers and packers in customary commercial practice which are new, clean, sound, securely closed, and so constructed as to ensure safe delivery to the point of destination. Apples tray packed or cell packed in cartons shall be arranged according to approved and recognized methods. Pack shall be at least fairly tight or fairly well filled. Closed cartons containing apples not tray or cell packed shall be fairly well filled or the pack shall k sufficiently tight to prevent any appreciable movement of the apples. Commercial labeling and case markings, as may be augmented by the contract or purchase order, that comply with regulations under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act shall be acceptable.
Quality assurance: All apples shall be graded and certified as to quality and condition by the Fresh Products Branch, Fruit c and Vegetable Quality Division, Food Safety and Quality Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. The grades of apples shall be determined in accordance with the established requirements of the applicable U.S. Standards for Grades of Apples and the U.S. Condition Standards for Export in effect on the date of solicitation.
